The Ladle

The Ladle
The Ladle is an ecumenical soup kitchen for the homeless, disenfranchised, lonely, poor, children, families, the underemployed and anybody that is hungry. The Ladle is operated out of the Presbyterian Church at 9th and Maplewood Avenue in Ambridge. Dinner is served in the church dining room one time each week. Every Monday at 5:30 PM, a hot meal is served to approximately 50 underprivileged residents of Ambridge.

Meals at The Ladle are provided by volunteer groups from various churches in our area. The Presbyterian Church Sewickley (PCS) has committed to serve dinner at The Ladle four times per year. Our goal is to mobilize a volunteer force of 35 to 40 representatives from our church that would be willing to participate in this ministry. Eight volunteers are needed for each meal. With 35 to 40 volunteers, each individual would serve about one time per year.

Each volunteer takes responsibility for preparing one element of the meal (e.g., entrée, starch, vegetable, salad, dessert, beverages, bread/butter and snacks). For example, the salad volunteer would prepare enough salad and dressing for 50 guests. Volunteers prepare the food in their homes and deliver their dish to The Ladle at 4:30 PM. Food items are re-heated at The Ladle prior to serving. Volunteers set the tables, greet the guests and serve the meal buffet style. Afterwards, everybody pitches in to remove the trash and clean the dining room and kitchen. By 7 PM, we are on our way.

Volunteering at The Ladle is a hands-on opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors in Ambridge. Most volunteers at The Ladle agree that the benefit they derive from the experience is much greater than their commitment of time and expense to prepare and serve the meal. And that is what the ministry is all about.
